Sodium hydroxide (lye) is a necessary ingredient when making bar soap.

During the cold process method, oils and fats (fatty acids) are mixed with lye and water (the base) to initiate a chemical reaction called saponification. This magical process creates soap and leaves no lye in the finished product.
